Chronic diseases are becoming too common at an alarming rate in the United States. Hourbands is a solution to managing this problem by simply showing patients when to take their daily or hourly prescribed medication.
Chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, asthma, and diabetes are the leading cause of death in the United States. According to Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease, “133 million Americans, 45% of the population have at least one chronic disease.” This statistic is eye-opening especially since chronic diseases are responsible for many deaths in the United States.
Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease found that “seven out of every 10 deaths in the U.S., killing more than 1.7 million Americans every year” is in the hands of chronic diseases. This is a serious problem for the United States.
This graph shows the increase of chronic diseases in people. Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease states that “chronic diseases can be disabling and reduce a person’s quality of life, especially if left undiagnosed or untreated.” The consequences of not treating a chronic disease a person has will affect their quality of life and can lead to death. In many cases, symptoms of chronic diseases can be managed with prescribed medication. However, missing a pill or more can negatively affect the outcome of the person’s health.
The result of missing one pill or more can negatively affect the outcome of the person’s health. Therefore, we invented a simple medication reminder called Hourbands to reduce medication nonadherence and to positively improve the quality of life of those who are diagnosed with a chronic disease.
